Car Impound in France: Procedure, Timeline and Real Costs in 2026

Your car has been towed to the impound lot. Whether it was for illegal parking, no insurance, or an administrative reason — here is exactly how to get it back, what deadlines apply, and what it will cost.

Why a car can be impounded in France

Common legal grounds for towing:

  • Dangerous parking (pedestrian crossing, bus lane, intersection…)
  • Abusive parking (same spot for more than 7 consecutive days)
  • Abandoned vehicle (no plates, heavily deteriorated)
  • No valid insurance (detected by police)
  • Temporary restriction (roadworks, public event — announced by local order)

How to find your impounded car

If you return and your car is gone:

  • Call your local police station (commissariat) or gendarmerie — they have access to the national impound database.
  • In Paris: call the Préfecture de Police on 01 77 90 88 00.
  • Check fourriere.gouv.fr if your municipality is connected to the national portal.

An impound notice should have been left on your car dashboard before towing. If you weren't there, you'll receive one by post.

What documents you need to retrieve your car

Present these at the impound lot:

  • Original vehicle registration document (carte grise).
  • Valid driving licence.
  • Valid insurance certificate.
  • Proof of payment of impound fees (or a payment agreement).

Impound costs in France in 2026

ItemApproximate cost
Towing operation€100–€140
Daily storage fee€15–€25/day
Administrative fees€30–€60

A car retrieved after 48 hours typically costs €180–€250 minimum. After a week, expect €300–€450+.

Fees accrue every day, including weekends and public holidays.

Deadlines: do not wait

A vehicle unclaimed within 30 days of impoundment can be declared abandoned. The impound authority notifies the registered owner by recorded delivery. After the deadline, the car may be sent to a certified destruction centre with no compensation.

Can you contest an impound?

Yes. You have 10 days from notification to challenge the impound at the Police Tribunal (Tribunal de Police). Valid grounds: incorrect grounds for towing, unreadable sign, order not published, car towed before the legal delay expired.

Contesting does not suspend storage fees — retrieve your car first, then contest.

How a QR code could have helped

One of the most common avoidable impounds: a neighbour notices a no-parking sign going up for roadworks and wants to warn you. Without a way to reach you, they can't. A Klaxie QR code on your windshield lets any passerby send you an alert in 30 seconds — and you move the car before the tow truck arrives.

Stay reachable before the tow truck shows up: Klaxie turns any passerby into a useful alert.
